Mahogany

“Mahogany” on our racks covers several genuinely different timbers, not one species — and quality and character vary a lot between them, so it’s worth knowing what you’re actually buying rather than assuming they’re interchangeable.Plantation Mahogany is the most common of what we stock, grown on plantations in Fiji. It has a warm reddish-brown colour, fine even grain, and works, glues and finishes easily — a dependable, consistent choice for furniture, cabinetry and turning.Old Growth Khaya Mahogany is a separate African species, sold in old-growth stock with denser grain and richer figure than the plantation timber — sought after for guitar necks and bodies and other work where tone and figure matter. We also bring in Congo Mahogany and, from time to time, QLD Northern Brush Mahogany — a native Australian timber that shares the “Mahogany” common name but isn’t botanically related to the others at all. What it’s good forAcross the range, Mahogany is a classic choice for fine furniture, cabinetry, joinery and boat building, and turns well too — popular for bowls and detail work where a stable, easy-working timber is needed.Because these are genuinely different timbers with different working properties and price points, check the individual product listing for species and origin before you buy, or call us and we’ll talk you through what’s actually on the racks and which one suits your project. We’ve been a specialty timber merchant since 1969, and Mahogany in its various forms has been part of our range for most of that time.
